Lisey’s Story by Stephen King – Book Review

From the publisher:

“Every marriage has two hearts, one light and one dark . . .
Lisey Landon shared a profound and sometimes frightening intimacy with her husband, Scott, a celebrated bestselling novelist — and a man with many secrets. One was the place where his gifts of imagination came from, a place that could heal or destroy him. Now, two years after his death, it’s Lisey’s turn to face Scott’s demons on a nearly fatal journey into the darkness he inhabited. . . .”
I am, admittedly, a huge fan of Stephen King, yet until reading Lisey’s Story I had never given thought to the character and quality of King’s female protagonists. So many of them have suffered through some sort of trauma, many times sexual and often at the hands of family (Dolores Clairborne, Gerald’s Game, Bag of Bones, Cujo, The Shining, The Dark Tower, Rose Madder, IT). But in Lisey’s Story, Stephen King has given us a wonderfully whole heroine. Lisey starts off reflecting upon her life as the “famous writer’s wife”, always off to the side while her husband Scott receives all the accolades. But three years following his death, Lisey must come into her own and face the unusual past that she and Scott lived together. So unusual, and sometimes difficult, that Lisey has hidden much of it behind a “purple curtain” in her mind, and it takes a strong force of will and dire circumstances for her to eventually rip it down and fully face what lies behind it.
After all was said and done by Lisey (and King), I was completely enchanted. I wanted to sit down and talk with her – keep the story going. Given his large body of published work, it is often hard for me to choose just one or two stories or novels to call a favorite when I think of Stephen King. But Lisey’s Story beautiful, haunting, heartbreaking and ultimately redeeming – is right at the top of my list, and will always be.
