I try to give homemade gifts to our extended family each year, in an effort to reduce our consumption of new stuff and to give gifts that actually have some meaning behind them.
We usually make photo calendars each year, along with something we canned. As I didn’t make any preserves this year, my gift to my family was herb salt. It consists roughly of:
3/4 cup sea salt
1 & 1/2 cups dried, organic herbs from my garden (I used sage, thyme and oregano but you can use just about anything)
5 cloves of garlic
I chopped the garlic by hand and gradually combined it with the salt as I chopped. Then I added the herbs and chopped those in as well. The recepie I followed said to chop until the mixture had the constancy of course sand. My mixture was a bit courser than that. It’s supposed to dry by an open window for a few days, but I figure 24 hours next to our wood stove ought to do just as well.
Merry Christmas Eve!
I’m going to have to try that! I try and go homemade a lot, and we do photo calendars for the grandparents.
Do you think you could teach me how to make preserves? I desperately want to do that!
I can’t claim to be any kind of expert on preserves, but I’d be happy to teach you what I know. Let’s get together for that!
Sounds like a plan! 🙂
Cool! What’s your weekends like this winter?
The only upcoming weekends that don’t work for me are January 7/8 and January 28/29. Otherwise this Mama is wide open! 🙂
