Welcome to the 14th edition of Windows on Wildlife! If you have a recent post about wildlife you’d like to share – it can be anything: birds, insects, mammals – scroll down to the end of the post and add your site; a compilation of all additions will be posted the following week. Please don’t forget to link back here (I’d love it if you’d add the Windows on Wildlife button which you can find on our sidebar) and visit other blogs that have articles to share. Thanks for stopping by!
This was a pretty new experience for me, has anyone else ever witnessed this? I was walking along a quiet mountain road (yes, we went up to the Catskills for Labor Day weekend) yesterday when I heard noisy rustling and branch-snapping above my head. I looked up in time to see a gray squirrel plummeting to the ground (or actually, the road), legs stretched out to all sides. It landed with an ungracious SPLAT!, then with the slightest head-clearing shake jumped up and ran off into the woods. I felt kind of bad, but was doubled-over in laughter just the same. How often do you get to see wildlife mistakes? If wild animals experience embarrassment, I’m sure that squirrel was completely mortified. Sort of makes me feel better about breaking my toe tripping over some toys last week…

Michelle from Rambling Woods linked up with us last week for her Nature Notes series, and in addition to all her own contributors shared some beautiful photos from her property in upstate NY. Stuart from Paying Ready Attention captured a photo of a stunning Flame Robin, and Jenny at Just Photos by Me shared some beautiful lion photos and a feline mis-identification story that made international news (yup, heard about it over here!). And in addition to their usual array of fantastic bird photos, Gary and Boomer shared some beautiful River Otter and Raccoon shots.

Yes seen a few squirrels fall!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
Glad to know I’m not alone!
My friend who rehabbed squirrels said it is common for them to fall especially during mating time when it all chase and sometimes they get hurt..glad this one didn’t…Michelle
Interesting, that makes lots of sense. I was really glad this one didn’t get hurt (I only laughed after it had run off!) – I was sure it was going to be injured, given the height it fell from, and the fact that it fell onto a road.
