Windows on Wildlife Update & Lichen

My apologies for not getting this week’s Windows on Wildlife published. A few things in my life (including my health) had to take priority, and it just didn’t get done.  No worries, it will be back next week with another snappy observation on the wild world.

In the meanwhile, here’s a neat pic I took of some lichen (even though they’re not in the animal kingdom) the other day while my oldest son was having his riding lesson:

This is a species called British Soldiers (named for their red caps); they’re pretty much the only lichen I can identify without help. Lichen are absolutely fascinating organisms; they technically consist of two different organisms – fungus and algae  (organisms from two different kingdoms) existing together to form a new organism.

This article from Fairfax County Public Schools in VA does a nice job discussing the form and function of lichen (way better than I could manage…): http://www.fcps.edu/islandcreekes/ecology/british_soldiers.htm

Happy Autumn!

    1. Thanks Michelle. You’re right, this is definitely the time of year for illnesses to creep in. Trying to rest and recoup!

    1. I’m doing ok, thanks Jenny. Just pushed myself too hard, and trying to come back. Looking forward to your Windows on Wildlife post next week!
